So what gave me the bright idea to just change my entire life? I mean, I am going from being an Accountant, that has worked with companies worth millions of dollars to an Esthetician student. Why? Call me crazy but I believe life is truly what you make it. In this post I will walk you through how I finally tapped into my core values and found my true purpose and focus.
Right out of college I got a great job, I was blessed with a loving honey bunny and a beautiful little girl. By the time I was 23 I was the head of an Accounting Department for one of the fastest growing technology companies in my area. I thought I had made it but, I found myself unable to enjoy those two most important beautiful blessing previously mentioned. At first I thought, well I just need a different job. I thought, "I must not be cut out to run a department, I need to work alone." So I did for a while, but soon found myself in the same place. I knew the world of accounting (as it stood) wasn't for me because I found myself having to choose between going home to put my daughter to sleep and staying at work to wrap up a project. Like alot of working mothers I was torn between being a great wife and mother & being great at my job.
What Are Your Values
Your values are what drives and motives you to get out of bed everyday. Values are the ideas, concepts, goals, people that you feel are vital to you creating the life you really want. I was so far from my values that I had to search them out.
When sorting through any mess, we first sort things into groups. It is how we were trained as children to make since of shapes, foods, clothes etc. It is just how we as humans operate. I took this same approach in trying to figuring out why I was so unsatisfied even though I had everything society told me I should have to be blissfully happy. Problem was nothing was inline with my values, but first I had to know what the heck my values were.
HUGE Tip: Anytime you are feeling frustrated or overwhelmed, make a list. It is a nice data dump to clear the mind. In this case, I made a list of 20 things that was important to me. I only spent about 30 minutes doing it, because I find that the first answer is usually the most honest answer. And, let's face it without honesty this entire exercise is pointless. And, don't worry, I have a Cheat Sheet : Know your Values to make it even easier on you.
When I was done, my list was made up of alot of my family members, my personal reputation or how I am preserved in the world, helping others and being able to provide for my family. I found it very interesting that being an Accountant was no where on the list. Align Your Life with Your Values
So many times as women we put our identity in what we do and not who we actually are. I had to reverse that mentality and through the Know Your Values Cheat Sheet I want to help you do the same. This exercise revealed that I liked the surprised look I received at work when I was introduced as the Accounting Manager, but I loved the kisses my daughter gave me when I picked her up from daycare way more. I also found that I HATE loosing, way more than I love winning. Point being, there are key things about myself that I allowed to be out of balance because I was chasing a flawed dream and tainted reality.
