How to Prepare for Your 1st Waxing Treatment - the ultimate guide

If it's your first time waxing, I recommend getting a professional waxing treatment. Home based wax products aren’t usually the best, and certainly, leave more room for error.   It's best to choose a professional whose appearance is neat and clean - it'll reflect in their service. Now that you’ve found a professional that is licensed and insured and have made an appointment; there are a few things you need to do before hand.

Prep to Wax Check List

  1. The day before your body waxing treatment use a body scrub while the skin on the face is generally exfoliated enough in terms of waxing, the body needs a little extra help. A somewhat gritty body scrub will help rid dead cells around skin pores and hair follicle, providing an easier waxing service for both you and the waxer.
  2. Do Not  apply astringent or toner. These tighten the pores and can make a firmer hold on the hair follicle. So hold off right before waxing.
  3. Consider taking aspirin, Tylenol, Advil or some other over-the-counter analgesic about 20 minutes prior to being waxed.
  4. Dull the nerves in the area by applying a numbing spray or cream about 15-30 minutes before your wax. Your waxing professional may give you a sample pack while you make you appointment. A good one to purchase is“PFB: Numb It”.
  5.  The following steps are things your esthetician should be doing so look for them.  It starts with them asking questions to ensure that you are not using products that are contraindications to waxing. These include: microdermabrasion, chemical peels, sunburn, Retin A, Accutane, and other vitamin A skincare products. These products can cause your skin to tear or lift and will result in hyperpigmentation or scarring. If you are using vitamin A, topically stop using it for 48 hours before your waxing treatment.
  6. You will need about 2 weeks of hair growth, That is about a ¼ inch for fine hair and 1/2 inch for coarse hair.
  7. Not every hair will be removed on your first visit, (especially if it's a Brazilian and full leg). Your hair grows in different cycles, it will take about 3 visits to be smooth and completely hair free. If you have been shaving for many years it may take a few more visits, But it is definitely worth the wait. At Oasis Skin Care Clinic we offer a complementary 2 week follow up waxing appointment to  wax the hair that was too short or not yet grown out.
  8. Don’t tense up. Some people hold their breath or tense their whole body while getting waxed. While it might be easier said than done, breathe deeply, a relaxed person will cope much better with the pain.
  9. At least for 24 hours after waxing protect, your skin from the direct sunlight exposure. Wear a high SPF sun screen on the area waxed. If you've had a Brazilian wait a minimum of eight hours before having intercourse. If your arm pits have been waxed wait 24 hour before applying deodorant or antiperspirant.
