Nail polish and nail lacquer are used for the purpose of nail protection. Polish is a varnish applied on the nails to make them shiny, whereas nail lacquer is a much thicker solution. According to Webster’s Dictionary, a nail polish is defined as: “varnish applied to the fingernails or toenails to color them or make them shiny”.

Nail polishes give a shiny effect and provide thick coating to the nails. This coating helps protect the nails from the external factors like cracking and flaking. And who doesn’t love a little color?

To apply a lacquer to something is to give a smooth and glossy finish to that substance. Therefore, nail lacquers are nail polishes, with added thickness for even better protection.  Lacquers are known as varnishes which dry off quickly, when applied to the nails. They also provide a lustrous look to the nails  with an embellishment.

In short, Nail Polishes are used primarily for color and decor, and Nail Lacqer is for protection. In today’s world of so many polish options, it can be overwhelming to decide which choice is the best for you. Remember the difference between polishes and lacquers on your next visit, and then all you will have to do is “pick a color”!
